Morlaix CCI opens the château du Taureau, the emblem of the bay of Morlaix, to the public in June 2006, after 8 years of work and the development of a cultural and touristic project. Built in the 16th century, rebuilt by Vauban in the 18th, this "fortress at sea", secured on a small island at the entrance of the Morlaix river, has alternately assumed functions of defence, prison, second home and sailing school, before being abandoned at the beginning of the 1980s.
It is this rich history which the public discovers when embarking at Carantec and Plougasnou. In the Château du Taureau itself, from the drawbridge up to the terraces, by way of the blockhouses, the cell of the famous communard Blanqui or even the governor's flat, the visit will allow discovering the living conditions that the castle reserved for its "guests". Thematic boards and sound animations will guide day explorers on the three levels of the building.
Introduced as of 1994 by the will of all local public stakeholders, the rebirth of the castle symbolizes the economic and touristic revival of the Morlaix region. The restoration work was led by the State, the owner of the site, who delegated management to Morlaix Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 3,5 million Euros were necessary to provide new life to this monument. 20 to 25,000 visitors are expected each year. Morlaix CCI offers companies the opportunity to associate their image with the château du Taureau thanks to corporate patronage formulas proposed within a 1901 association act: The "Carré des mécènes du château du Taureau" (sponsors of the château du Taureau).
